Desk I've always dreamed of Sep 10, 2011 By R. EARLS "r.e."
I LOVE this desk (and bookshelves and file cabinet). I recently built a home office and began the search for my dream desk. I visited multiple local & on-line furniture stores. However, I fell in love with this desk the instant I saw it on Amazon.com. The only downside was that there were no credible reviews of this product anywhere and I had a lot of questions before I spent this kind of money. Thankfully the reseller and manufacturer answered my questions. Here is my list of what I like and don't like about this product.

PROS:
* It's beautiful! My wife thought I was crazy when I started designing this home office and now she's jealous. It's quite possibly the nicest piece of furniture we have in the house.
* It is solid wood! Not sure what type of wood. Definitely not particle board with a vinyl veneer like a lot of the other junk out there. It's incredibly solid and heavy. You see the stained wood grain when light shines on it. You hear the quality when you rap your knuckles against it.
* Fit & finish is good. Drawers all fit well and work, are flush with the base and look well designed. Drawer rollers work well and are quiet. Wood stain is a very nice dark brown. The (florets?) that surround the desk appear as if they were carved out a single piece of wood (although I'm sure they're just glued on and stained).
* Size. I'm 6' 2" and I find most desks are too small or too low. This desk is 31" tall, and you have 26" of height and 30" of width for your legs! This allows me to sit at my proper height and not have my legs rubbing the bottom of the desk. In addition, the desk top is enormous! More than enough space for computer, pictures, lamps, etc...
* Modular. It comes in four major pre-assembled pieces. Two bases, the middle kick plate, and the top. Thanks to this, I was able to get it into my home office which only has a standard-size bedroom door. I can also un-assemble it if/when I move.
* Computer friendly. Has two port holes on top of desk to allow cables to run below. This keeps your desk looking tidy and doesn't distract from its beauty. It also has a built-in surge-protected power supply below. That way, you've only got one cable running from your desk to a power outlet in the wall.
* Somewhat easy to assemble. The instructions are just three sheets of paper with just a few diagrams. However, it's very easy to follow the instructions and includes good hardware. With the help of my wife and son we had it assembled the same day it arrived. Just have two strong and patient friends handy when you assemble it.
* Excellent packaging. As expected, shipper was rough with the boxes and had some tears in cardboard box. However, I inspected everything before I signed for it and found everything was VERY well protected by styrofoam, foam sheets and plastic.
* Shipped very fast. I know this isn't always the case for everyone, but I had it within a week of ordering it.

CONS:
* Made in China. :(
* No option for in-house delivery and assembly. It's delivered to your house in boxes and unless you hire someone, you'll be uncrating it, moving it and assembling it. Believe me, this is quite a task.
* HEAVY!!! The top of the desk alone is 150 lbs (remember when I said it was solid wood?). If you're installing it upstairs, get two young & strong guys to carry it for you. Otherwise, you'll throw your back out.
* The middle kick-plate that goes between the two bases didn't line-up properly when installed. It's designed to fit snugly around the molding at the base of the desk and flush against the two bases. However, no matter what we did, we couldn't get one side of the kickplate to line-up flush, leaving a small gap on one side. The gap is only visible when light shines from behind the desk, so I was able to forgive this. This was the only complaint I had with the quality of the desk (and the loss of 1 star).

OTHER:
* It has a genuine leather writing area on the top of the desk. Very nice.
* Top drawers are felt-lined and have cove-shaped wood trays for pens/pencils.
* One of the bases has drawers for items and hanging files. The other base contains a single large space to house things like a computer or printer. However, the facade of both bases look exactly the same.
* The center drawer has a flip-down face which allows you to use it as a pull-out keyboard tray if you want to. Otherwise, just use it like a regular desk drawer.
* You can get matching bookcases and file-cabinet (which I did). Makes for an amazing looking room.

I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for that kick-plate not being flush. However, I'm extremely pleased with this desk and I feel I got everything I paid for. I'd highly recommend it.

This desk is absolutely gorgeous. A lot of great features to complement the beautiful exterior - great drawer space, leather top, and a central connection for the computer, monitor, printer, and auxiliary. Highly recommend!

We shopped around a lot, and we ended up buying this one. We got the matching file cabinet and bookcase too.

The wood is very nice looking. The set is VERY heavy. Like most desks in this class, it is made of a mix of MDF, solid wood, and wood veneer. It isnt a $3000 desk quality, but it didnt cost $3000 either! It looks fantastic in my office. Shop around, the prices seem to vary by reseller.

The drawers open and close smoothly, and I love having all the extra space for files now.
