Not for modern car keys. Dec 20, 2007
By Jeff The reason they designed this key case was to address the security problem with older magnetic key cases. Magnetic key cases are primarily used to hide car keys somewhere on your car so you can access the key if you accidentally lock yourself out. The problem is most car thieves know to look for these cases. Since there aren't that many places to hide them, most thieves know where the likely hiding spots are.
So GE had the bright idea to include a combination lock on the magnetic key case. Brilliant! Problem solved! Thieves can't get to the key because of the combination. But not so fast. GE didn't have their thinking caps on when it came to actually designing the case.
Many modern car keys come with an integrated security FOB as part of the key. This case is not large enough for the new keys. It's also not waterproof. So you'll destroy your FOB with water if it rains and it gets in the case (unless you can find a spot on the car that won't get wet).
And it's not obscure car keys that come with the FOB. My 2005 Honda Accord, 2007 Honda Ridgeline, and 1999 Mercedes ML320 keys all don't fit in this case.
And as Kyung Lee pointed out in his review, the case is plastic so it's easy to break open.
Great idea, poor execution. For a new product, I can't believe GE didn't do their research and find out how big modern car keys are. They need to go back to the drawing board and make it bigger, give it an O-ring to make it waterproof, and make it out of tough metal for better security.

This Thing Is Useless Apr 18, 2008

Another great GE product:
If you twist the cover with very moderate force you'll crack open this thing. The reason I even tried doing it was because the combination lock stopped working and I had to retrieve the key.
Don't waste your $$$ on this.

Did this pass product review? May 27, 2010
By Lawrence Silver It is plastic and if someone really wanted it contents it would be easily invaded but that is a trivial problem compared to the combination defect in design. Every other small combination lock I know requires that it be OPEN before you can change the combination. This make design sense as if it were closed (or locked) to change the combination anyone can change the combination and get the contents. Yep that is what this unit does. It requires that the unit be CLOSED to change the combination. This means that anyone can come to this "lock box" and while it is closed change the combination and get to the contents inside. It boggles the mind.

Handy and secure! May 18, 2007

This will be very usefull. It is one thing to hide a key around your house, but another thing to hide one in an inconspicuous place and have the added security of a 3 number self setting combination to access your house, boat, trailer or other keys. I am not sure how easy it would be to open with a sledge hammer or other device, but it will at least keep the honest folks out, and is better that putting your key under your mat or closest rock near your porch! The magnet is very high power and will feel safe even using this on the tounge of my travel trailer knowing it will not fall off! Great idea, and Great Product! Thanks G.E.
