Good Device For Price Aug 15, 2009
By Synthpopguy I'd been looking for a good way to store my guns and as many of you have probably found out, electronic lock boxes can get quite expensive. I originally wanted a biometric-based safe that would open with a thumbprint. The cheapest one I could find was priced at $210. That's what makes this product so attractive. For roughly 70% less than the biometric safe, I could easily store my guns with an electronic combination.
Here are a few points that I didn't see mentioned in the description or previous reviews:
* The box will hold three normal sized pistols (with trigger locks) if you store them upright (vertically, resting on the slide) without any problem. You will also be able to fit four or five boxes of ammunition in the safe if you get really creative.
* The combination is a maximum of six keystrokes. Notice I didn't say "digits". One keystroke can equal 1 button, 2 buttons, or 3 buttons pressed simultaneously. In other words, you can press multiple keys at the same time and the box accepts that as a single keystroke. For instance, a simple combination might be H,K,M,O,A,H. In this instance, you would simply press each key in order to open the safe. However, you could get creative and use a combination of HK,OMA,H,HAK,MKH,KO. In that instance, you are pressing multiple keys at the same time to equal one keystroke. This makes the safe infinitely more difficult to break into using a brute force attack.
* Yes, the little button to set the combination can be a little hard to find since you can't see into the box in a way that would allow you to view the button. You just have to feel around for it. It is lined up directly with the center of the 'M' button and is nearly flush with the left side wall.
* The exact interior measurements of the floor of the box are: 12 9/16" deep, 9 3/4" wide, 7 7/16" from floor to ceiling.
* The device requires four AA batteries which are NOT included in the box. I think that's a little cheap, but I won't ding Homak for it.
No, this is not a gun safe. If someone really wanted to break into it, they probably could with the right tools and a few hours. But it is PERFECT to keep curious fingers from getting a hold of a weapon in your home. I still ended up buying a biometric safe for the gun I keep in my bedroom for home protection (simply because it gives me faster access), but the rest of my guns are kept in these Homak safes.
A recommended buy!

Buy a nightmare for only $60 Oct 10, 2009

"Tool User"
The box is quite strong and includes hardware to mount it to a shelf, wall or cabinet. It is made in China. My unit failed, in the locked mode, within 24 hours of setting it up. The green light showed the correct code was entered, but the solenoid failed to unlock the door. Fortunately there was nothing in it at the time. Imagine the consequences of such a failure: The box is designed to keep you out. There is no way to service it from outside. You have to cut it open. If you have mounted the box to a fixed object, you are going to have to rip it away from that object. Suppose you have three pistols inside when it fails. Are you going to ship a steel box containing three loose pistols back to Homak for service? I don't think so. You will have to find someone with a cutting torch to open the box, with potentially bad results for the polymer frames and grips of your handguns in the process. A really bad day all around. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

worth the price Jan 23, 2009
By D. Corrieri Handy little secure safe for weapons storage. Given time someone could break into it, but as I also have an alarm system that is not the major concern for me. For the price this is a handy little safe that secures the weapon while still allowing it to be fairly easy to access. I store my Glock 30 and AMT backup along with magazines easilly inside it.

Worked fine until it didn't... Dec 02, 2010
By Scott T Lee I have used this pistol box every day for over a year. I had come to consider it one of my most reliable. That opinion changed the other morning when I attempted to open it to retrieve my pistol before leaving for work and my code wouldn't unlock it. I tried several more times with the same result. I put a 9v battery up against the external battery leads and tried my code again to no avail. I read a little online and found others with the same problem. I didn't keep the manual with the default code, so my only option was to forcefully open the box.
I'm not sure what I'm more disappointed about:
The fact that my code was apparently forgotten and I was left with no choice but to break in to my own lock-box (which BTW contained a loaded gun).
OR
The fact that it took me less than 2 minutes with a flat-head screwdriver to have this thing open.
The lock-box is ruined as a result of my screwdriver skeleton key, but even if it was still usable I could never trust it again. I am glad this happened during a routine opening of the box and not at a time when my families lives depended on it.
Thanks to Amazon, my new GunVault should be here in a couple of days.

Great Value!!! It is WAY higher quality than price suggests! Oct 03, 2009
By Kohong W. Chen Well, I was a bit skeptical at first when I saw this safe for $60. It was considerably less expensive than most other safes with electronic keypads and similar sizes. I was expecting to pay no less than $120 for a safe this size.
I went ahead and placed my order. When I received the safe, it surprised me how big it was. It was plenty big enough for my current collection of 3 full size hand guns and 1 smaller hand gun. The steel box is well constructed. The corners are tightly fit. The steel is plenty thick enough to probably withstand some serious abuse from a sledge hammer. The lid could possibly be pry'd open with a lot of work, but it is suitable as a major deterrence for thieves and curious children.
The safe comes with instructions, a rubber mat for the inside floor(No foam is included for the inside), screws for all the mounting holes.
The safe's combination codes are great. You can produce your own code out of up to 7 key combination. One key stroke could consist of multiple simultaneous buttons. It would be VERY VERY hard to guess the correct combination if you get creative. It is also easy to manipulate in the dark. If the batteries run out then there is a 9V jump start jack in the front. After you enter the code, you simply press on the door and it's spring flips it open. This safe could be operated silently if you are careful with opening the door.
I would highly recommend this safe at the current price point. I have bolted my safe onto an upper shelf of my closet. It would be really tough to get it open since it is at an awkward angle to get any tools or hammers to it. I am very happy with the size of the safe. All 4 of my guns fit with LOTS more room for ammo and other things.
