A fun, amusing desk toy Jul 14, 2010
By Dr. Bojan Tunguz This is an amusing desk/office toy that actually illustrates some very intriguing and nontrivial physics principles. The toy is made out of a pendulum and a stand. The pendulum is metallic/magnetic, and inside the stand are several magnets that modify the motion of the swinging pendulum. The motion of the pendulum is modified in an erratic, unpredictable way that in principle cannot be easily predicted form the way the pendulum is originally moved. This is characteristic of chaotic motion, and this toy is a very neat and inexpensive instrument that can be used to introduce someone to the ideas behind the chaos theory. Eventually, the pendulum settles at some point above the rim of the stand. Various parts of the rim are inscribed with several words that can be used as a sort of "decision" for one's actions. I found that certain words come up more often than others, but other than that the pendulum worked fairly well. The build of this toy is fairly solid, although it should be handled with care. Overall, I think this is an amusing and educational office toy that can be a lot of fun for those much needed work withdrawal moments.

Perfect office edition Apr 20, 2011

"Baton Rouge"
I must say, my old boss used to have one of these decision makers. Hers was a higher quality and therefore probably cost more money. For the price, this is an amusing gadget to have on your desk at work or at home. It's like an 8-ball for this century. People love coming to my desk and playing with it.

Neat gadget, delivery slow May 27, 2011

The third party vendor was slow in delivery. There: I've said it.
Now for the product. It's really quite cute. A simply coil of wire in a loop at a spring at the top keeps the pendulum ball from resting in the center point of the base. Consequently, if one presses it to the center and lets go, the ball will flip and jerk from "decision" to "decision" before landing on one. No batteries or gimmicks necessary.
The price, it seems to me, is right for the level of genius of such a neat little thing.

This is how I get work done now. Jun 29, 2011
By J. Throckmorton So I set this thing up on my desk and now people can not stop playing with it. I'm a huge fan of the item and the toy does exactly what I want.
The one thing I was not certain on is how uncertain it would be. Until the magnet finally rests you have absolutely no idea where it will stop. I have seen it wavering around one side and completely flip to the other side at the last moment.
The item can take up to a minute to rest if you really swing the ball high but can take as little as 15 seconds to rest if you give it less of an arc to start.
If you are looking for a fun toy to make decisions, this is a winner!

Decently cool Jul 17, 2011
By Bradely Pitts 5/5 for being unique and more interesting than an 8-ball.
3/5 for being cheap. It comes it two pieces: the base and the suspender. You gave to hook the pole into the base and it easily rotates from side to side. So if you don't install it perfectly perpendicular to the base, or you bump the pole, it becomes off-balanced and you will see the magnetic ball pointing to the same "answer" over and over...poorly designed.
