9-year pencil Mar 27, 2009
By M. Jacoby I am replacing my PhD mechanical pencil after using it for 9 years. It is the only pencil that I will use. The grip is perfect. The eraser does not rotate back in while erasing as other pencils do after time. The eraser also lasts a long time, and are easily bought at department stores and office product places. This is the best pencil out there.

Best Mechanical Pencil Dec 15, 2008
By A. chen This is the best mechanical pencil I have ever used. A bit pricy but I guess you get what you paid for.

LOVING THIS PENCIL! Jun 08, 2008

This pen goes with me everywhere! The kids love to do their schoolwork with it. I'm buying them each one. It has a perfect grip and the lead is easy to refill and last a long time. The eraser lasts a long time too.

The only pencil I'll write with. Jan 15, 2011
By From Detroit As a math grad student, I did a lot of writing. I needed a mechanical pencil that:
*Held a lot of lead;
*Had a high quality, non-abrasive, long lasting eraser;
*Was comfortable.
The PhD fit my needs perfectly. I've packed it with over 12 standard 0.5mm leads, and could probably fit more without jamming. The eraser is the white rubber kind that won't tear holes in your paper or smear, and it's about 1.5 inches long (twists up as needed.) The barrel is nice and fat, with nice cushioned grip, so I didn't have to worry nearly as much about hand-cramps.
This pencil also had features that I didn't know I'd want/need. The mechanism that holds the lead in place, for example seems "spring loaded." If you push hard, you can feel the spring take off some of the pressure, and the lead will retract slightly. This helps to prevent excessive breakage. And when using 0.5mm leads, one can clearly see the advantage! I also believe that this "spring loaded" feature has something to do with reducing fatigue/cramps.

way too expensive, but it's solid Oct 01, 2010
By S So I've been using these PhD pencils for a long while now, and I was pleased to find this model because they don't seem to make them much any more.
Here's the gist need to know before considering buying it:
-It's overpriced. I saw a six pack of these at big lots one time for $8, which was amazing. If only I bought ten boxes of them then. That said, this pencil is solid.
-The pencil is solid, but it's also pretty heavy and bulky (the picture'll give you a fair idea about that.)
-The twisting eraser is probably the main feature of the pencil that makes it worth it. It's easy to use, lasts a long time, but may depress after a while.
-If you get unlucky, the tip might stop working after a while. I've had a few of these that've last me years and a few of that've last me days. It's unfortunately inconsistent, but often the graphite-immobilizing mechanism might fail and you can't write with the pencil any more.
