These pens write very smoothly, with no hesitation on starts (except for the very first time you use them, when you may need to scribble a bit to get them going), and no skips.
In the ballpoint pen world, some pens are more likely than others to stop working sooner if you hold them too close to horizontal or upside-down when writing (like if you are writing on a vertical surface, or in bed). These pens stop fairly quickly, but fortunately, they also recover quickly when you hold them upright.
I recommend storing these pens (and most ballpoints) horizontally, if convenient, especially if you let them sit unused for extended periods. Storing them point-up may make them harder to start when you pick them up again, and they are more likely to blob up if stored point-down for a long time. I usually keep these pens flat, and they start flawlessly every time, without blobbing.
The "bold" size is just right. A fine line is okay for dark-colored inks (regular black, blue, and red); but brighter inks can be harder to see, especially on paper that isn't bright white (like a puzzle magazine or newspaper crosswords). These "bold" or broad points are perfect: big enough to see, but not too big for margin notes, puzzle hints, etc. Obviously they're not ideal if you like to do pages at a time of tiny, cramped writing, but the size is good for most purposes.
None of these inks are fluorescent, so they're all easy on the eyes. I love the green, turquoise, and magenta inks. They are vivid, strong, and easy to read, though if you're color-coding, you may have trouble telling the green and turquoise apart, especially in poor light.
I love the orange ink too, but it isn't as easy to see as the others. The orange pen is perfectly okay if it's the only pen you're using, but if you're using it with the other pens on the same page, the orange may seem weak by comparison. This shouldn't be a big problem, but it would have been better if it had been darker. (Incidentally, the five-pack I got came with two orange pens. That was fine with me, because I use orange for editing.)
I recommend these pens highly if you like alternative ink colors and don't need to write really tiny.
