Safeco Folding Truck: Not Near As Good As It Looks Jul 23, 2010
By TheGadgetNerd

I wanted to love this Safeco Hide-Away Convertible Truck (at this writing have had for about 15 months), but it's needed more maintenance than an old car. Sure it looks good and works when you first get it, and if you use it twice a year, no problem (for 2 years anyway). I am a musician and I know how to make equipment last for years... I use the truck about 2-3 times a month and I do NOT overload it. I had to first replace the swiveling casters because they began to buckle under normal load, replaced with good American casters (they were of a light gauge steel and the bearings also fell out of them!) The various bolts on the truck, (and there are many, some of which cannot be accessed) have to be tightened often to maintain integrity. Then the locking-bar (which is used every time you open and close it) lost the end caps and became unusable until I finally found some metric replacements. The last problem which I cannot even fix because the bolts are not accessable, keeps the telescoping base from sliding closed, so it cannot be shortened to folding position. No kidding on any of this. The overall design idea is great, but it is poorly implemented, and for users who really need a workhorse of a hand truck, the Safeco Hideaway Folding Truck is one shoddy piece of gear. If the importers would like to send me an improved version for use and review, let me know! Until then, this review stands.

Not as sturdy as desired Apr 15, 2010
By D. M. Teller We ended up returning the item. It was OK but not as sturdy as we were expecting for the use it was intended. It is more suited for light to medium use. We ended up buying a commercial grade hand truck from another source. The return was easy and the refund was prompt.

My New Handtruck Feb 19, 2009
By George Kunkel

The handtruck folds into a nice compact package. There weren't any instructions but it wasn't too hard to figure out how to get it into the different positions. In the upright handtruck position it's a little over four feet high so if you're tall it might seem like a toy. In the four wheel dolly setup it's very stable. I'd buy it again :)
Great concept, poor execution, can be made to work well Mar 24, 2012
By Studio Builder The concept of this Safco is great. It folds up into a wonderfully compact package, and it can be configured to work in quite a few different ways.
Unfortunately, the construction leaves much to be desired -
The casters are just crap, plain and simple; perhaps the flimsiest, cheapest casters in the world. They fell apart after a few uses.
Also, the machine screws that hold all the bits and pieces together down at the foot plate loosen up quickly. When the screws loosen, things become rickety - you need to tighten them regularly. They have split lock washers on them, but they're made out of cheap steel, so the washers just lose their spring, flatten out and stop keeping things locked together.
Despite these problems, I love the way it collapses into a very compact package - it is the handiest hand truck I have ever had and it takes up very little room when folded up. So I decided to try to make it work better, and I succeeded.
First, I found some new, high quality casters with threaded stems that thread into the place where the old casters went. Worked fine, until the mating threads on the CASTER stripped - more low quality steel in fasteners. Since the mating nut is welded to the hand truck, I got some two part epoxy, glued the stem back in the nut, and clamped it overnight. It's been holding; so far so good.
I also removed the screws that loosen up, put some super glue on the threads, and screwed them back in. So far so good with these, too.
So in a nut shell, if you're willing to put some extra work into this product, it should perform well and for a long time. Perhaps a person actually CAN make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.
Falls Apart Feb 20, 2012
By Barry J. Kronsberg Purchased this 3/10/10, Safeco replaced it 1/31/11, and now (2/20/12)I'll be calling them for another replacement. The small wheels fall apart and the unit is not sturdy. The little balls come out and then the wheel breaks off. Yesterday, we where wheeling merchandise out to our car from an event when the wheel broke off. The entire stacked merchandise almost went into the windows and doors of the building. Do not purchase this if you folding truck unless you don't mind replacing it every year. Safeco does stand behind their products but how many times are they going to replace this one? I'm hoping Safco will let me upgrade to a platform with larger wheels. Maybe I'll have better luck with a platform trolley.
