5Best available in its class  Jan 18, 2011 By mark vaz
After reading some very bad reviews on the battery-operated push-button safes, I decided to find one operated mechanically. V-Line industries was the conclusion, and looking at the sizes and prices, I decided on the deskmate. It is the right size to hold a full-size handgun, spare ammo, my passport, car title, and a few other important documents I felt better being i a safe place. I have a full-sized gunsafe for the remainder of my firearms, but wanted something close by and quickly accessible, but safe from my inquisitive 2-year old. I also wanted something simple and reliable, and, of course, well-built. V-line is all that. The deskmate features a quick-release mount which I used below the drawer on my nightstand, easily accessible but out of the way. It has a removable drawer, and the combination is very simple to customize with comprehensive directions. With 5 buttons, which can be used singly or 2 at the same time, the possibily combinations exceed 1000, easily something anyone can remember. A simple turn of the know clears any incorrect combination to make the safe quickly and quietly accessible. Very heavily built, hidden hinge, all welded, I think the only improvement I'd say would be a removable pad over the inside of the door, which I easily fabricated myself, to protect the finish of a handgun being removed.
Not inexpensive, but well worth the price for the quality and reliability and outstanding design.

5Excellent little Safe  Mar 18, 2011 By YSC1911
I own a gun. I have two small kids. I wanted quick access to my gun for home defense but to keep it safe from the kids. I have various safes at home including a Barska biometric fingerprint safe and a keyed in wall safe. Each have drawbacks. The Barska safe while it was very nice, it did not open 100% of the time with the use of my finger print. Plus it needs batteries, which could fail. Murphy's law would dictate that it would only happen when you are in an emergency. The keyed in wall safe while hidden and secure needs a key which also needs to be hidden from the kids which means it would take a while to get the key and fumble around with it and try to get the safe open. Not a great situation.

I happened upon the V-Line after looking a long time for the ideal safe. It has a mechanical lock which consists of 5 buttons and a knob. You can program it however you wish and was simple to do. Works every time. Takes a second to open it. No fingerprint to worry about, no key to lose or fumble with. The safe is small enough to hide well from sight. I have mine installed under the night stand. Very difficult to see unless you got down on your hands and knees to look. The safe it self is made of heavy steel and is powdercoated in black. Fit and finish was excellent and for the price it had better be. There is a tray that fits in the safe so you can pull things out without having to stick your hand in. You have to realize the safe is kind small. The hinge is very nice and welded on one side to deter one from trying to punch out the pin. It comes with only the mount that you see on top of the unit. There are two thumbscrews you can unscrew from the inside of the safe to detach it from the mount and take the safe with you. The Universal mount bracket DOES NOT come with it. The picture is misleading. This means you can only mount it to an under surface. For me it did not matter. Just be aware you would have to spend additional money to get the extra bracket.

Anyway, it seems like a very secure way to keep the kids from the gun. I have two quibbles with the safe. I use it to store a full size Smith and Wesson 1911 in there and it is slightly too big for the safe. The beavertail of the gun pokes out just enough to keep the door from closing if I lay the gun on the left side which is the position I would prefer it in. If I lay the gun on the right side though, there is a bit of room for the beaver tail to fit into and the gun fits fine without having to force the door closed. The locking mechanism gets in the way. I would have liked to have laid the gun in the tray and slid that into the safe but the fit was even tighter that way. A full size M&P pistol fits in perfectly with room to spare. I suppose I could stick one of my smaller guns in the case but I prefer the 1911 for home duty.

My other quibble is that the safe is decorated with the gold trim you see in the picture. While it does look sharp and is well done, it really attracts attention to the safe. Like I said I have it under my nightstand and wanted it to be stealthy so what I did was to take black duct tape and try to cover up as much of the gold bits as possible. Looks pretty ghetto but hey at least it's harder to see. Without the tape you eyes go right to the safe. With the duct tape it just looks like a shadow under the night stand.

All in all, a fantastic little safe for a handgun. I can't recommend it highly enough.

5Excellent compact safe  May 09, 2011 By D. Levy
I am a big fan of the V-Line series of safes. You can remove the drawer if you do not like it, and V-Line thoughtfully has a nice felt lining so the firearm never touches metal (even without the drawer).

I have two finger print opening safes, and I have never been impressed by them; maybe it will correctly read my finger print, maybe not. The simplex lock utilized by V-Line always opens quick fast and in a hurry.

However, it should be noted that that side mounting bracket is NOT included with the safe (it is pictured with the side mounting bracket). The top mount (which is included, and pictured) is easily detached/attached for mounting under a table, shelf, etc.

It is such a great safe I just ordered another.

5Pretty Dang impressed!  Jan 24, 2012 By Adam G
Installed it in my set of drawers to allow quick access to my Glock 17. I installed it vertically and the drawer allows me to pull is straight up and grab my gun. Installation was easy, changing the code was easy. Product is a of a very high quality. Code enters very easily, repeatably and quickly.

I would like to have seen felt covering the entire inside so you can install it vertically and the "quick release" screws would scratch anything when you pull it up. Also, the quick release screws make it hard to mount vertically as sometimes they catch the gun on the way out. I simply reversed the drawer so that is rests against the screws and the gun in sandwiched between the felt on both surfaces.

Overall, I am very impressed. It stores my full size Glock 17 with the TLR-2s installed on it with no trouble. I know I can access my gun in seconds and others (kids), unwanted folk are unable to access my gun. Beats leaving it out next to my bed. Worth the $178 in my opinion. Plus it is battery free, so no worries about it running out!

I totally recommend this product.

5Does what it says, quality product  Aug 05, 2011 By harryhoudini "whodkne"
I don't know if this is actually made in the USA but the company is local to me. The cost versus other similar style/quality devices that do not have batteries is quite affordable. I didn't want to deal with extra keys, batteries dying, etc. It has a nice quickmount plate (not the one shown on the sides, that does not come with it but you can buy it.. the universal plate). Changing combination is easy, build quality is great and it comes with a nifty felt lined drawer that you can use or not. The bottom is also lined. Mounting it under my bed, takes 2 secs to open at the most and is great to keep prying hands away from firearms.
