Bargain HP 12C copy Feb 03, 2010
By J. Devine I have the HP 12C that stayes in my computer bag. I wanted something similar to have in my office, so I thought I'd give this a try. It is a chinese copy of the 12C- the only difference is the "f" and "g" keys have become "b" and "r" keys. Same layout and RPN data entry.
Cons: - Build quality: the HP is designed to be thrown in a briefcase and have things dumped on it. The V12 is much more of a desktop style. THe HP feels like it uses more of a polymer/epoxy frame, while the V12 is hard plastic and looks a bit cheap. - Key feedback: the HP has a satisfying clich, while the v12 is a bit more mushy. The key fit a bit better in the cut outs on the HP. - Size: Despite having almost the same footprint (the V12 is a bit bigger), the form factor of the V12 is a lot bulkier. - Case: I like the pouch for the HP 12C Gold better- it protects the calculator without being bulky. The new HP Platinum 12 case is a bit bulkier than on the 12C Gold, but is real leather. The V12 had the bulkiest case of any of the three and is made of "pleather" or some such petrolium based product. It still works.
Pros: - Uses AAA batteries instead of CR2032 batteries in the HP platinum or watch batteries in the regular HP. - Screen is a bit larger and angled on the V12 which is nice when you are using it on a desk. - 1/3 of the price of the HP 12C. - I've tested it out on some medium difficult time value caculations and got the same answers as the 12C. Always a good sign. - RPN!!! I love RPN - Looks cheap- less likely to be stolen off a desk.
Factoring in the price, definately a 4-5 star purchase. I've only had it for about a month, using it every work day, so we'll see how long it lasts.

As advertised... Oct 17, 2010
By Larry Ellis I don't have an HP 12 calculator, but from everything I've read this calculator is a virtual clone of that model. The retail box claims that this calculator is up to 6 times faster than the HP. I can't vouch for that but claimm but it wouldn't surprise me.
I have an original Sharp EL-733 financial calculator. In fairness, the Sharp is about 20 years old. It was built in the days when a business calculator was constructed to last a lifetime. While I love the Sharp's look and feel (it's more compact than the Victor) its speed for complex calculations can't compare with the Victor. A complex IRR calculation on the Victor finished in just under 10 seconds. Using the Sharp for the same calculation, I literally had time to whip up a sandwich and eat it before the calculation was finished. It definititely took more than five minutes to complete the calculation (probably more like ten). The Victor's result for the IRR calculation was accurate to about 8 decimal places--much more than you'd ever need.
Calculator speed is not usually an issue. Both the Sharp and the Victor produce instant results for simple TVM calculations. Virtually no one uses calculators for more complex financial computations any more since spreadsheets are everywhere and much easier and reliable for that kind of task. Still, should the need arise this calculator is capable of doing what you need, and doing it quickly.
On the negative side, I don't particularly like the feel of the keys on this calulator. They take a fair amount of force to press yet have a mushy feel that provides no tactile feedback. You can enter numbers fairly quickly and accurately, though, in spite of this shortcoming.
All-in-all, this is a fine calculator and a very good value. It comes with a (not unattractive) vinyl carrying case, and, yes, it also has a manual. And, while the included manual does its job (it's about 70 pages), you may not need it because you can download HP's HP12 manuals which, as you might guess, are far superior.

Quality HP replacement, but TI BA II Plus is more to my style Jun 04, 2010

If you are used to using the old HP financial calculators, you will love this one. If you are not, you will probably prefer a TI BA II Plus. I have tried both and find the BA II Plus to be much more intuitive. That being said, build quality is higher than most calculators I have used and it has more memory than the HP calculators it replicates.

HP copy that tries but doesn't make the grade Sep 07, 2010

On the positive side is the larger than standard display size. On the negative side is the cheap build quality that means buttons don't respond reliably. Save up for the real thing.

Works like an HP12C Platinum at much lower price! Dec 01, 2007
By John in Chicago

I used the HP12C Platinum for about a year. I lost it. Someone recommended the Victor V12. It looks much nicer. The display is huge compared to the HP. The calculator works the same. The wallet is very nice. I can't believe how much better this is than the HP for less price.
